The initiator of the ceremony was Art Smith, known as the former personal chef of Oprah Winfrey. It is noted that Smith met his future husband in Miami in 2000, and in 2010 they were officially married. The chef decided to organize a mass wedding after he found out that a ban on same-sex marriages in Florida was declared unconstitutional.
During the ceremony, which was held in the courtyard of the James Royal Palm hotel, couples were showered with rose petals. Gala dinner was taken care of by Guy Fieri who hosts several cooking shows on American TV channels. It was noted that the guests were served dishes like fried chicken, grilled lamb, avocado stuffed with crab, crepes stuffed with meat and a seven-layer cake decorated with gold and silver. Music for the event was provided by a popular Miami DJ Chi Chi LaRue who is a transvestite.
In August of 2014, a federal judge Robert Hinkle found a ban on same-sex marriages in Florida unconstitutional. The state appealed this decision in the Federal Court of Appeals, and it was suspended pending resolution of the case. On January 6, 2015, the decision of judge Hinkle came into force and same-sex marriages became legal in the state of Florida. At the same time, the proceedings in the Court of Appeals on the case still continue.
