The member countries of the European Union are discussing the possibility of implementing new sanctions against Russia. For them to take effect there needs to be an approval from the EU Council, reports the TASS agency with reference to the official representative of the European Commission Maya Kosyanchich.
“We have accomplished a lot in the previous months to prepare possible measures which are still relevant. Some of them have already been reflected in the adopted restrictions. But for each new addition to the current documents we need a new legislative proposal from the Council, “- said Kosyanchich.
According to her, one of the main items on the agenda of the meeting of the foreign ministers of 28 EU countries, which is scheduled for November 17 in Brussels, is the situation in Ukraine.
“Obviously, the answer from the EU, among other options, includes sanctions and we are currently discussing this issue,” – said Kosyanchich.
She also said that EU foreign ministers will discuss the situation in the east of Ukraine based on the information from various sources, primarily from the observation mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The ministers will also decide “what kind of answer the European Union will give in this context.”
To extend the sanctions and for their revision we will need a unanimous decision of all 28 EU countries.
