Ursula von der Leyen

In her opinion, the dialogue with ISIS is not possible while the channels of communication with the supporters of the DPR and LPR and Russia are open.

In addition, von der Leyen stated that the “Islamic state” in Syria and Iraq does not have access to that amount of weapons that Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics have. “They (ISIS) have fairly modern weapons, but in limited quantities. At the same time, military aid from Russia to the separatists is theoretically unlimited. Are we really thinking of supplying the Ukrainian army with enough weapons so that it had a chance of winning? “- Asked the Minister a rhetorical question.

Von der Leyen noted that one of the reasons for the Franco-German peace initiative – is the debate in the US government regarding the supply of weapons to Ukraine.

On February 6, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande arrived in Moscow to discuss steps to resolve the situation in Donbass. On February 5 Merkel and Hollande visited Kiev, where they met with Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko. German media reported that the plan for a ceasefire proposed to Ukraine by the two leaders provides for a high degree of autonomy for the regions controlled by the militias.

Earlier it was reported that senior US officials and military are re-considering the possibility of supplying arms to Kiev. Republican Senator John McCain said that if US President Barack Obama will not give his consent, then the Congress will pass a law obliging the US to supply weapons to Ukraine.

The terrorist organization “Islamic State” in the summer of 2014 seized part of the territory of Iraq and Syria and proclaimed the caliphate there. Several thousand civilians and soldiers became the victims of the insurgents.

Since April, the Ukrainian military have been conducting in the east of the country a military operation against the supporters of the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, which declared independence from Kiev.
