This statement was made by the company Alcon Entertainment, which will produce the film, reports Variety. The filming will begin in 2016.
“We are proud that Harrison is with us and Villeneuve, whose talent we have already seen in the film Prisoners. We will create a very powerful sequel to one of the most famous films in the world,”- said the representatives of Alcon Entertainment.
The publication explains that the new movie will show the characters a few decades after the events in the original film.
Earlier it was reported that the director of the original film, Ridley Scott, refused to work on the sequel as a director. He will only serve as a producer on the project.
The original sci-fi film by Ridley Scott, Blade Runner, was released in 1982. In addition to Harrison Ford, it starred Rutger Hauer, Sean Young and Daryl Hannah. In the storyline, the humanity is divided into two types – people and cyborgs, created by genetic engineering and performing functions of slaves in the society. The main character, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) has to catch an escaped robot that poses a danger to people.
The movie grossed a total of 33 million dollars in the box office with a budget of 28 million, but it garnered the praise from critics and scholars. The film was nominated for Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA, but only in the technical categories. According to various polls, scientific community has recognized Blade Runner as one of the best sci-fi movies in the history.
