The news of the death of Cynthia Lennon was published on his official website by her son, Julian Lennon. The cause of her death was a cancer disease. “Julian was always by her side these days. The family thanks all for your prayers and kindly asks to respect their right to privacy in these difficult times,” – it said in a statement.

Cynthia Powell met the future rock star when they were both attending the Art College in Liverpool. In 1962, Cynthia got pregnant and John Lennon suggested to get married. The couple was married in August of the same year, and their firstborn – Julian, was born in April 1963.

Despite her status as the official wife of John Lennon, Cynthia was kept in the shadow, and many Beatles fans did not even know that Lennon married. As later Cynthia recalled, their relationship began to deteriorate when the musician got hooked on drugs, which adversely affected his character and his state of mind. In 1968, Cynthia filed for divorce after she walked in on her husband in their home in the company of Yoko Ono.

In 1978, Cynthia Lennon published a memoir about her life with the former “Beatle”. After the death of John Lennon, Cynthia Lennon gradually began selling their memorabilia at auctions in order to improve her financial affairs. All her attempts to create any kind of business related one way or another with the name of her deceased spouse proved unsuccessful. She later admitted that all these ideas belonged to her husbands.

Cynthia Lennon tried to assert herself also in the music industry, but also to no success. Julian Lennon’s musical career turned out to be much more successful. In 2005, she published another biographical book about John Lennon.
