The movie which tells a story of the brutal regime of religious fanatics, received seven awards in eight nominations, reports Agence France-Presse.
The movie has won in the categories “Best Sound”, “Best Movie Score, “Best Cinematography”, “Best Editing” and “Best Original Screenplay”. Sissako was named the Best Director. Thus, he became the first representative from Africa who has received this award. During his acceptance speech at the ceremony, the director said that he wanted to show how the residents of the ancient city in Mali have to fight for their survival after the jihadists came to power in 2012.
The Best Actor Award went to 25-year-old Pierre Niney (movie Yves Saint Laurent). In the category Best Actress the award went to 26-year-old Adel Haenel (movie Love at First Fight). And the award for Best Supporting Actress went to Kristen Stewart who played in Cloud of Sils Maria an assistant of Juliette Binoche’s character. An Honorary Cesar for the contribution to cinema went to the American actor Sean Penn.
The Cesar awards ceremony was held on Friday, February 20, at the Paris Theater Chatelet.
